MACON SLOWLY OPENED his eyes, watching Emma leave the room and turn down the hallway. Being woken up with a kiss wasn’t something he’d ever have expected, certainly not after the way things had been going today. Part of him wanted to jump up and follow her, kiss her the way he’d always wanted to. But that insanity was quickly squelched by the fact that he was so exhausted he wasn’t even sure he could get up. His eyes closed and he drifted back to sleep.

Chapter Thirteen

No one was slowing down with Emma’s case, least of all Macon. It had been a long day of interviews and dead ends. He was more than ready to return to Emma’s, maybe do some training with Bogie to burn off some of the tension inside him. He was on his way there right now, having gone home only to shower and change clothes.

Even though technically he was off the clock now, he was driving his police-issued SUV in his continued hope of using it as a warning sign to would-be intruders. Would Emma be glad to see him? Hard to say after how they’d left things.

Yes, they’d supposedly made their peace with each other last night. But this morning, their conversations had been stilted and awkward. Emma must have spent most of the night mulling over what had happened, because she kept apologizing. That had him apologizing to her for making her feel like she even needed to apologize. What a mess. He’d tried to assure her that it was okay. And it really was. He understood how she felt. Someone going through the things she’d experienced had every right to be upset. It was just unfortunate that he’d been so tired he let himself get angry in response. Being tired was never an excuse to act in a way that upset someone else. He should have been more understanding.

Hopefully they could move past this blip and go back to the easy friendship they shared. Although more and more, he was having trouble separating that friendship from the idea of something far more intimate and lasting. Especially since Emma had awakened him with that far too chaste kiss. He hadn’t mentioned it, not wanting to embarrass her since she obviously hadn’t intended for him to even know about it. But he couldn’t quit thinking about it and wondering what it meant, and wishing for so much more. Which was really confusing since a few days ago she’d talked about them going back to the ways things used to be, meaning just friends, once the case was resolved. Was she fighting their attraction for a reason he didn’t know about? Or did she truly not want to be more than friends?

He shook his head, not sure what to make of everything. It didn’t seem possible that so little time had passed since they’d come back into each others’ lives. And that so much had changed inside him as a result. Where before,
